It also became part of The Beatles’ live repertoire in 1965, particularly on their summer tour of America. Filmed on the ski slopes of Obertauern, Austria on 20 March 1965, it was a forerunner of the music videos which would later become widespread.

‘Ticket To Ride’ was the soundtrack to a key scene in the Help! film. One of EMI's official documents shows "I Am A Walrus".Don Short, journalist A Hard Day’s Write, Steve Turner Then again, mistakes do occur in documentation. " came about, and also "I wanna hold your ham". But beware: that's how the misheard line "It's such a feeling that my love, I get high, I get high. I must admit, the vocal has no clear 'd' sound. So it was done deliberately, by the record executives, if you believe this version. I've also been told that it was originally "Rye" but was changed on the documentation to be "Ride" in an attempt to deal with the fact that no-one in America knew where Rye was, and so this would confuse Americans less. So "Rye" became "Ride" in print by accident. I've had various accounts of how an error was made in the printing of the record labels, or in studio documentation, and that it was too late to go back and fix.

It is claimed that the lyrics as written and sung are "She's got a ticket to Rye". Here's what the writer for What Goes On said:Īlthough I've never seen any official Beatle-sourced confirmation of this, many reports say that this title is in itself an anomaly. It says that it might have actually originally been "Ticket To Rye", but they changed it to "Ticket To Ride" to not confuse Americans since they might not know where Rye was. I saw something on What Goes On about the title actually. You know, it's quite interesting, the name of this song.

If you watch HELP! again (and why not?), this song is used in the sequence where the boys are frolicing in the snow in their long coats, DR WHO scarves and top hats. She had it made, she had a "ticket to ride" in that sense but it wasn't enough and she had to take off. You know, you ask "Have you got your ticket" as you're leaving for the airport or bus station, not "Do you have a ticket to ride?" Recently, it dawned that the narrator was supporting her, paying the bills for both of them, and all she had to do was be around for him. Maybe it's a British phrase, I've never heard anyway say it in real life. Is the girlfriend starting a new job and moving up in the world ("I don't know why she's riding so high.")?Īnd the phrase "ticket to ride" puzzled me for the longest time, too. So maybe he was prepared for this to some extent and even agrees it's not working out? This is a song where I wonder what the deal is.

"I think I'm gonna be sad." He THINKS? He's not sure? "She said that living with me was bringing her down/She would never be free when I was around" sounds like a slow built-up process and not a sudden dramatic argument that led to a break-up. So anyway, the narrator is being dumped by his girlfriend and he's upset but he seems to have mixed emotions about it. I've heard cover versions of this song that are slow and mopey, and that sort of makes sense but to me it robs "Ticket To Ride" of its vitality. The lyrics are sad but the melody is brisk and upbeat, and this dichotomy always appeals to me for some reason. One thing about Beatles songs, you recognized them in the first few seconds. I love the clear healthy sound of "Ticket To Ride," opening with George on guitar and a Ringo drumroll that is so distinctive (I need to do a long essay on how essential Ringo was), then John starting to sing with Paul joining for harmony.

With "Help!" the Beatles started doing songs with some introspection and surprises, and they came into their middle period (after pot but before LSD, not really kidding). Nothing wrong with that, but EVERYONE in pop was covering that field. Their first few albums were centered entirely on dating, romance, holding hands, dancing. This was around the time of HELP!, when the Beatles were beginning to experiment with more complicated arrangements and breaking away from just relationship songs.
